Controls on Terrestrial Carbon Fluxes in Simulated Networks of Connected Streams and Lakes

چکیده

Inland waters play a critical role in the carbon cycle by emitting significant amounts of land-exported to atmosphere. While gas emissions from individual aquatic systems have been extensively studied, how networks connected streams and lakes regulate integrated fluxes organic inorganic forms remain poorly understood. Here, we develop process-based model simulate fate terrestrial dissolved (DOC) dioxide (CO2) artificial inland water with variable topology, hydrology, DOC reactivity. is highly dependent on reactivity, find that mineralization more efficient lake-rich networks. Regardless typology CO2 emitted almost entirely within network boundary. Consequently, proportion exported increases versus export ratio. Overall, our results suggest are governed interactions between relative amount reactivity inputs configuration recipient streams.

Carbon isotopes in terrestrial ecosystem pools and CO2 fluxes.

Stable carbon isotopes are used extensively to examine physiological, ecological, and biogeochemical processes related to ecosystem, regional, and global carbon cycles and provide information at a variety of temporal and spatial scales. Much is known about the processes that regulate the carbon isotopic composition (delta(13)C) of leaf, plant, and ecosystem carbon pools and of photosynthetic an...

Physical controls on total and methylmercury concentrations in streams and lakes of the northeastern USA.

The physical factors controlling total mercury (HgT) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in lakes and streams of northeastern USA were assessed in a regional data set containing 693 HgT and 385 corresponding MeHg concentrations in surface waters. Multiple regression models using watershed characteristics and climatic variables explained 38% or less of the variance in HgT and MeHg. Land cove...

Temperature controls on aquatic bacterial production and community dynamics in arctic lakes and streams.

The impact of temperature on bacterial activity and community composition was investigated in arctic lakes and streams in northern Alaska. Aquatic bacterial communities incubated at different temperatures had different rates of production, as measured by (14)C-leucine uptake, indicating that populations within the communities had different temperature optima. Samples from Toolik Lake inlet and ...

Lakes and streams as sentinels of environmental change in terrestrial and atmospheric processes

© The Ecological Society of America www.frontiersinecology.org A ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to environmental change and many are, at present, severely degraded. Ironically, this vulnerability makes aquatic ecosystems good sentinels and integrators of environmental change at scales ranging from local (eg extinctions of endemic species) to global (eg climate change). Freshwater fish, ...

Controls of carbon dioxide concentrations and fluxes above central London

Eddy-covariance measurements of carbon dioxide fluxes were taken semi-continuously between October 2006 and May 2008 at 190 m height in central London (UK) to quantify emissions and study their controls. Inner London, with a population of 8.2 million (~5000 inhabitants per km 2 ) is heavily built up with 8% vegetation cover within the central boroughs. CO2 emissions were found to be mainly cont...
